RYA Boat Training Centre at Burton Waters Marina
High Quality Boat Training in Exquisite Surroundings
Burton Waters Boat Training is an RYA recognised training centre based at Burton Waters Marina. With over 220 nautical miles of navigable inland waters including the tidal sections of the Trent & Ouse. The Wash and North Sea are accessible from our marina opening up coastal possibilities for training and flotilla trips that are provided.
Our RYA recognised training centre can provide tuition on and off the water and will style courses to your abilities and requirements, whether RYA certificated, or for example, you’ve recently changed your boat and require some assistance or wanting to build confidence before or further on from a course. We are always available to speak to and offer advice before and onwards after your training. Training is available on one of our centre boats or on your own craft which we recommend to give hands on experience of your particular vessel.
Overview of Courses
The training centre offers courses to anyone interested in developing their boating skills; these are either RYA Certified Courses or Non-RYA Certified Courses.
Courses offered from our training centre include the Helms certificate which is excellent for both Inland and Coastal Waters and when it comes to close quarter boat handling, Powerboat levels 1 & 2; we also run the CEVNI test. Online is accessed through the RYA Interactive learning site.
Training can be carried out on your own boat or on a centre boat. From Burton Waters we can access the Fossdyke, Witham and Trent navigations. The Wash can be navigated to via the River Witham; the North Sea via the tidal Trent and Humber as well as the River Ouse to Goole and York.

Learn basic skills with an RYA Instructor but without the pressure of a certificate, perhaps you require some hints and tips with a new boat.
- Accompanied Passages
We can accompany you on your boat on tidal trips to possibly relocate from one marina to another.
- ‘Cruising In Company’ – Guided Flotilla Tidal Trips with Burton Waters Cruising Club
Cruising in Company is a great way to experience and learn the practical and theoretical elements of the tidal rivers close to Burton Waters. We style the flotillas to guide and build experience with other boaters guided by our RYA Instructors.

Our RYA Instructor is an RNLI Water Safety Advisor and in this capacity we can offer Life Jacket Checks and Advice on Board.

On the Water Skills Training
On the water skills training, rope work, lock operation and theory elements all provide confident students who enjoy getting out onto the navigation.
Confidence Building
The skills of close quarter marina handling and mooring on your berth is a necessity. We focus to build confidence in a calm manner so you are able to enjoy the continued learning when you are alone.
Handling and Experience
Handling of a cruiser, narrowboat or barge, providing new and experienced boaters with the skills necessary to successfully skipper a vessel.
Meet Our Instructor
Iain Harvey-Ashenhurst our Principal and Chief Instructor has no less than 40 years boating experience on inland waterways and coastal. His experience spans all varieties of hull design and propulsion. Iain is dedicated to building confidence and ability through high quality, professional training that reinforces safe boating and enjoyable practices . We aim to guide and train your boating skills to increase your confidence, knowledge, experience and enjoyment of your time on the water. Building confidence is key to our centre and Iain is always on hand to be spoken to.
